Iranian Arms

President Bush and his various spokesfolks are trying to make a very large deal out of the discovery of Iranian weaponry being used against American troops in Iraq. Apart from the obvious suspicion we must all have about the veracity of anything that Bush says [see: ‘weapons of mass destruction’] I don’t follow the argument that Iran is therefore hostile to America.

First there is no evidence that the Iranian government has supplied the weaponry. General Pace, the Chairman of the joint Chiefs of Staff, has said that there is no link [yet] between the arms and the Iranian government. But Bush simply elides the point and leaves us all to ‘follow the string’ to Tehran. So he blames without blaming.

Second: as far as I am aware practically no weapons are produced in Iraq. That means that all weapons used against the Americans are imported from somewhere. To use the Bush argument all the exporters of said weaponry are therefore hostile to the US. Just for the record the US is by far the world’s largest exporter of weapons, followed by Italy, Russia, France, Germany, the UK, Canada, and Japan. The chances are that some of the arms these countries have flooded the world with have found their way into the hands of Iraqi insurgents. Is Bush going to start naming names from that list? Has he commissioned a study to investigate how many Americans have been killed or wounded by American made weapons? If there are any at all, does this make America a part of the ‘Axis of Evil’ and a deadly enemy of America? Should we invade Texas or embargo California?

Didn’t think so. Bush is just stirring up the waters because he wants to bomb Tehran. The funny thing is that I thought his usurption of ‘war powers’ negated the need for him to justify what he does. That was the whole point of trashing the constitution. He must be feeling weak if he thinks he needs to cook the books to justify his next war.

Time to impeach. Time to resist. Time to take America back.
