Bush and The Wiretapping Investigation
Just in case you missed the importance of Attorney General Gonzalez’s testimony the other day, here’s the key piece of information he gave up: it was George Bush himself who denied the Justice Department access to the shady world of the secret police wiretapping program. That’s right: the President himself gave instructions that Justice Department personnel should not be allowed to go over the details of the program. This is unprecedented. Never before has a president personally been involved in vetting security clearances for Justice Department investigations. Such details are usually handled at a much lower level of authority. So why did Bush get involved? What is so so secret that he had to give the word himself? Is the program that sordid?
The paranoia is astounding. This administration continues to sink deeper into the totalitarian abyss. And Congress fiddles while democracy burns. History will damn them all.
