Kansas Goes Ape … Not!

The Kansas Board of Education has become the latest group to attack the teaching of science. They have voted to include Intelligent Design [ID] in their school’s curriculum. Not only this, but they expanded the definition of science to include non-natural explanations of phenomena. In other words they made science non-science. If you want to know what real scientists thinka about teaching evolution go here: National Academies Press: Tools for Understanding Evolution Set
The Chairman of the Board has made it clear that he thinks science should teach only what’s in the Bible. Now this would be funny if it didn’t mean that kids in Kansas are now going to be taught bogus ideas and will fall behind their peers elsewhere. Intelligent Design is merely biblical creationism re-dressed for modern consumption. It has nothing to do with science. Evolution, as described first by Charles Darwin is the only scientific theory that explains the development of life on earth. The Bible tells a rolicking story, but it has nothing to do with the facts. The sad part is that America is beset by religious fanatics who would love nothing more than send us all back to the dark days of before the Enlightenment. They and the Taliban are identical in their goals: a theocratic state where education is supressed and subject matter is at the behest of mystics or clerics. There is no nice way of saying this: they are fools. I just hope that America wakes up to the damage they are trying to do to education.
