Remembrance Day
A quick note: today is Remembrance Day in the UK. Their version of Veteran’s Day. But there’s a big difference. They take it seriously. For all our bluster and faux patriotism here, we don’t. The big signal of the difference is that they obey a national moment of silence in order to remember those who have been lost. We just get on with life and wave flags about pugilistically in our imperial way. Bravado is not an honorable or mature way to remember. But it’s what we do well.
In any case: I will spend a few moments today to remember my dad who lived to the age of 52. I never knew him as a well man, his WWII injuries were debilitating and ultimately fatal. His absence still lingers in my life. And I owe him a great deal.
