The Scandal Deepens

For all those who still are in denial about the extent or import of the US Attorney scandal check out this editorial in the New York Times: Another Layer of Scandal

So for anyone who thinks this is a political fishing trip, try telling that to the poor woman [Ms. Thompson] who was sent to prison on evidence so thin and circumstantial that the Appeals Court had her released even before they formally decided on the case! This is outrageous. The US Attorney in Wisconsin pressed a case that was clearly trumped up in order to create some political noise ahead of the last election. The case was so bad it fell apart in no time. Fortunately the Democratic candidate survived and won, but the damage had been done to poor Ms. Thompson, who ended up in prison.

Now who is really guilty of politically inspired witchhunts? And this pattern was repeated elsewhere, most notably in New Jersey, where much ballyhooed case against the incumbent Democrat Senator Menendez has slipped quietly into oblivion since the election.

The evidence that there has been a concerted effort to corrupt the Federal justice system in order to assist Republican re-election chances is overwhelming. It looks very much as if the direction of the effort came from the White House itself. If it did, then Bush should be asked to account for his own role. At the very least Karl Rove should have to testify under oath about what went on.

Perversion of justice is not “just politics as usual”: it is an attack on democracy such as is found only in pathetic dictatorships like Zimbabwe.

It looks like crimes have been committed in the White House. We need to find who knew, and what they knew.

The rot seems to run all the way to the top. It has to be dealt with.
